"A sheer joy to drink."
Steve Heimoff, The Wine Enthusiast

"Exceptional: Highly Recommended."
Dan Berger

"Powerful Plum & Black Berry Aroma, with Nuances of Black Cherry & Clove ...
A Rich Long Lived Red Wine."
The Wine Spectator "92", The Wine Enthusiast

"It's a crying shame California does not get serious about Petite Sirah because
this wine shows just how good it can be. It's got Cabernet's full-bodied character, Zinfandel's spicy fruit, the airy, weightless quality of a Pinot Noir, and Syrah's
smoky notes. Add it up and it makes for one tasty if slightly savage wine."
Steve Heimoff, The Wine Enthusiast

"Deep Color and Spicy Aromas are Followed by Intense Berry, Plum,
Fresh Herb and Smoky Nuances."
Highly Recommended by the San Francisco Chronicle

Sable Ridge Vineyards is a Sonoma Valley winery whose owners are committed to producing small lots of exceptional handcrafted wines.

The overriding inspiration for Sable Ridge wines is found in unique and special vineyards. "They are 'old vine' vineyards whose very survival is testament to their distinction. Vineyards whose plantings make a proper match of terroir and varietal inspire us. Sable Ridge Vineyards' wines are the result of our desire to capture a vineyard's finest potential," explains Chuck Barr, owner of Sable Ridge Vineyards.

Sable Ridge was founded by Chuck Barr and Mary Ann Costello. The two wine lovers, whose attraction to Sonoma Valley was cultivated by numerous visits over fifteen years, would eventually leave behind the corporate life. Like so many others, they held a longing not merely to live in the wine country, but to be part of the wine country lifestyle by taking the ultimate plunge: opening their own winery. They decided they would pursue their passion by first working at wineries and taking classes in the ways of winemaking and viticulture.

"Sable Ridge wines are the result of
our desire to
capture a  vineyard's finest potential."
After spending time studying viticulture and enology at the University of California Extension in Napa, working in local cellars, and making wines for themselves and friends, Chuck and Mary Ann took the plunge into full-time commercial winemaking. Sable Ridge was founded in the fall of 1995.

Since the first release in 1996, Sable Ridge wines have been creative expressions of hand crafted wines from select vineyards. Rich and balanced Zinfandels from old vines have become staples in the Sable Ridge line up. The discovery of great Lodi vineyards and the delicious and elegant wines made from this area's plantings has led to regular bottlings of Sable Ridge reds from the region. An ongoing vision has led to distinctive wines made from grapes grown in old vine vineyards in the Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Sonoma Valley. maintained by Santa Rosa Localco

The Sable Ridge winemaking facility is located in the beautiful Bennett Valley. Though officially placed inside the Sonoma Valley American Viticultural Area, Bennett Valley is in fact a distinct valley all its own, with a terroir influenced by long, warm afternoons and the regular arrival of late evening fog from the west and north. Here, surrounding the Sable Ridge winery, lies six acres of carefully chosen Syrah vines that form an important part of the winery's identity. Sable Ridge is committed to extracting the full potential of carefully cultivated Bennett Valley Syrah.

Chuck Barr is the managing partner at Sable Ridge today. Mary Ann is involved in some of the winery's marketing efforts. Sable Ridge wines are sold from the company's web site (www.sableridge.com), off its mailing list and at a number of restaurants and retail shops across California and in other select U.S. and Canadian markets. Contact Chuck Barr directly via E-mail at wine@sableridge.com or by phone at (707) 542-3138.
